Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra

The SYSO consists of strings, winds, brass and percussion. SYSO strings should be capable of playing a standard romantic concerto movement and standard orchestral literature. Winds should be able to play standard orchestral literature, etudes, and concerti, and should consult their private teacher for confirmation of their readiness for standard repertoire. Past repertoire includes Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Dvorak, and Brahms.

Presto! Holiday Concert - Saturday, December 21 at 1pm & 5pm

Concerto! Concert - Sunday, March 16 at 7pm

Spring Concert - Sunday, May 4 at 7pm


Auditions received by November 8 will be considered for placement to begin November 10 for the Presto! Holiday Concerts on December 21.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Two Scales, quarter = 120, 3-octaves (except bass) separate bows or slur two
    • Violins: D major, C melodic minor
    • Viola: G major, D melodic minor
    • Cello: G major, D melodic minor
    • Bass:   2 octave, into THUMB position (without an octave drop).  D Major, C melodic minor
    • Winds and Brass: one major, one melodic minor scale
  • Prepared Orchestra Excerpts

  • Two passages of your choice
    • One fast solo passage that demonstrates technical facility and range.
    • One slow passage that demonstrates lyricism

Orchestra placement is at the discretion of the directors.

All SYO members participate in their school orchestra or band programs where available.


SYSO Tuition for the 2024-25 Season:
$400 (prorated)

  • Installment plans, Financial Assistance, and Scholarships available.
  • All members receive a Schaumburg Youth Orchestra T-Shirt.
  • Tuition includes a $25 family contribution to the Prairie Center Arts Foundation. 
  • Families with more than one child enrolled in the program receive a $25 discount for each additional child after one child is paid in full.
